Everyone 35 and under has been raised knowing the history of their world. Although they did not live through the actual eruption that killed off most of humanity, their parents did, and over time the history of what happened since has been written and kept on record. This page contains what the characters would find written in their current history books.

When the world's most powerful super volcano located in a place that used to be called Yellowstone National Park erupted, it covered half of the world in a wave of black ash and debris. The shock wave of the wall of ash leveled many towns and cities, and eventually lost momentum along the east coast of the continent of America. The massive amount of ash in the air blocked out the sun and lowered the earth's temperature by several degrees, starting an ice age. For the first few months the air was toxic and non-breathable, and crops and animals died, causing a famine as well. It was all of these factors that contributed to mankind's steady decline.
T I M E / E R A
After the eruption the year was set back to 0, and people are now counting the years based off of how much time has passed since the eruption. This is now year 35. Months, weeks and days are still counted the same. The first 15 years after the eruption were called the "Dark Era". The following were known as the "Era of Light", since most of the ash in the air has dissolved away and the earth is receiving sunlight once more, beginning to warm up. Following this, a transition period resembling the Medieval Ages culminated in the groups traveling a long ways to settle in a new land, a land seemingly frozen in the Middle Ages. Now, we are entering a time of renewal of art and culture and peace and humanisn. This is the Renaissance.

Immediately after the eruption, chaos ensued. Millions of people died, and those that survived were left without a home or a family. Most of the people that lived were those that live on the east coast of the continent of America, as well as people in Europe, two of the only places where the massive cloud of ash didn't quite spread to (this roleplay takes place on the east coast of what used to be the United States). Countries and governments fell apart, leaving the rogue survivors to themselves.
First few months: People lived as rogues, normally sticking to themselves or forming small alliances of up to four or five people. Almost everything that could be stolen or raided was taken at this time, supplies were relatively abundant. People generally lived in their own little worlds just trying to survive and avoiding all other human contact. The air was toxic from the volcanic ash and no one could go outside without a gas mask or else they would get severe lung damage. The weather was highly unpredictable and random due to the sudden change in climate. At this time two major natural disasters occurred in the city at the same time- a tornado and a massive earthquake. People were forced to leave the city and either went north or south, inhabiting the untouched areas around them. Many died.
First Year: After the tornado and earthquake forced the survivors into a corner, two groups of people, one in the north and one in the south, decided to band together and create a permanent settlement where they would have a better chance of survival. The two groups did not know about each other, and each formed their camps independently from the other. The northern group became known as Winchester Regime. The southern group became South Edge. Some rogues still roamed the city at this time. After a few months of relative peace and quiet for both groups, they found out about each other, and the discovery was not a pleasant one. Winchester Regime waged a war on South Edge, a war that several people died in, and that Winchester Regime ultimately lost. The effects of the war were so catastrophic for South Edge's physical camp that they had to move locations. After the war, both groups began experiencing issues with thieves, who eventually came to be called The Bandits. This group of loosely organized rogues raided to survive, and often endangered the lives of everyone else. By the end of the first year, a mutated form of Pneumonia began to plague the survivors, starting with the members of South Edge. Many died until a cure was ultimately found. This disease came to be known as South Edge Sickness.

Years 2-19: The transition years between the Dark Era and the Era of Light passed by in relative silence. Most of the survivors now had families and children, and so they focused on protecting them and laying low. Internal affairs and issues arose within the groups as is normal, but aside from that, no wars were waged and everyone was relatively safe. During this time period the canned and processed items that everyone was relying on for food ran out, and most learned how to hunt. Guns ran out of ammo. The earth's climate slowly began to return to normal.
Year 20: Year twenty was marked as a year of political unrest and big changes. The leader and founder of South Edge, Malachi Fulton, was overthrown by his son Chase Fulton, and South Edge was transformed into a monarchy, inspired by old Medieval times before the eruption. The Bandits have made several enemies at this point and their leader Jace Carther has been cracking down the whip on his members, torturing and killing many both in and out of his group. Winchester Regime seems calm for now.

Years 25-35: Year thirty was marked as one of new powers and changing climates. Resources were scarce in the current territories of the groups. Starvation seemed a looming reality, with all of the resources and animals being over exhausted. During this time, Zero Alvarian rose to power in South Edge, while Caden Winchester and Blaire Taylor kept the Regime stable. In the Bandits, Easton Cassel, heir of Jace Carther, had been slowly going insane. Around year 25, a new group emerged. They were the Auditors, a group of highly secretive government operatives from before they eruption. They had remained hidden in an underground base where technology still existed, observing the groups and waiting until they were strong enough to be approached with the idea of recreating the United States of America. Rejected by all of the groups, the Auditors decided to create another natural disaster by setting off the volcano once more to force the groups to come to them for help, or die trying to survive. In a scramble to escape, the groups sent scouts to find a new territory in which to reside. Following a fire which burned South Edge to the ground and a devastating second eruption, the groups embarked on a perilous journey. The new leaders in all of the groups chose to abandon their homes to find a new place to live. The Auditors, having failed, disbanded and became slaves to the groups or rogues. Having settled into a new territory, the groups are easing into a simulation of the Medieval Era.

Years 36-40: The first year marked the decline of Easton Cassel as Bandit leader, leaving Zayn Cassel as his heir. In the years after the groups settled into a new territory, a quiet struggle for power began in WR when Khan Winchester brutally tortured and blinded Bradley Jensen for sleeping with his girlfriend, Cosette Fray. Convinced that Bradley had died of his wounds, Khan was blind to the coup being mounted against him by Bradley and his sister, Riley Jensen, with the help of Zayn Cassel and the Bandits.
Year 40: Riley Jensen's reign did not last long. Pregnant with twins, she died in childbirth, leaving her half brother, Bradley Jensen, as the sole ruler of the Regime. Khan and the exiled Regime members sought refuge with the Tintuhli, where Khan worked his way up the ranks and is now Landon's right hand man.
Year 41: Khan kidnapped Alana Boyd, Zero's pregnant queen. A battle ensues for her life and Khan is betrayed. A virus, engineered by one of Khan's prisoners, is killing off mass populations of humans and animals.

Founded: Year 1, after the earthquake, by Derek Winchester
History: Winchester Regime (also called The Regime for short) was founded by Derek Winchester after he rescued a group of people during an earthquake. They formed their first camp in the north of the coast, and it had walls of snow as a perimeter, with tents inside and a farm for food. After losing a war against South Edge as well as their leader who was taken as a war prisoner, they returned to camp only to find that their home had been destroyed by a blizzard. They were forced to move to a new, more secure camp- an abandoned military bunker. After the move, things grew quiet in The Regime, and two of its members- Fawn Opaque and Mikael Demaere- unofficially organized and led the group, eventually becoming the official leader and second-in-command respectively. However, Mikael Demaere proved to be corrupt and ambitious, and tried to kill Fawn via poison, and so was publicly executed for his treason, leaving Fawn as the sole authority figure. The Regime has had a lot of issues with Bandits, more so than South Edge, and several of their members have been kidnapped by them. The Regime often tends to be divided on its views about torture and execution, and how to deal with enemies.
Current Leaders: Riley and Bradley Jensen
Second-In-Command: To Be Decided
Past Leaders: Derek Winchester, Fawn Opaque, Caden Winchester and Blaire Taylor

Fawn Opaque: First of WR soldiers to stand up to Derek's tyranny, shot Derek publicly giving Nate Taylor his chance to escape from the leader's torture, stole and kept Derek's gun as a trophy until it was stolen by a rogue during a fight which crippled her for life, tried to co-lead WR with Mikael Demaere until he attempted to poison her leading to his public execution. She was known for having small animals as pets, notably a black rat called Toby who was killed in a fight with a rogue and Marlowe, a white ferret who eventually died of age. Caden Winchester: The displaced son of the Winchester Regime founder, Derek Winchester, Caden spent much of his youth adrift in different groups. It wasn't until he met Blaire Taylor that he decided to take back his father's legacy. With the help of Blaire's long time friend and then-ruler of South Edge, Logan Alvarian, Caden was able to attack the Regime and kill Fawn Opaque and Jared Jensen. His rule was brutal and oppressive and marred with blood. Responsible for instituting the Gladiator games, in which prisoners would fight to the death for his amusement. His reign lasted over fifteen years. Died at age 38.

Blaire Taylor: The unholy offspring of Seth Taylor and Everly Smith, Blaire Taylor was a disturbed woman from the start. Somehow, she captured the attention of both Logan Alvarian and future husband, Caden Winchester, forming strong bonds with both men. This eventually led to her becoming a co-ruler of the Winchester Regime, aiding and abetting Caden in his bloody reign lasting over fifteen years. Died at age 34.

Riley Jensen-Winchester: The secret daughter of Fawn Opaque and Derek Winchester, Riley was raised by Jared Jensen, who didn't know of her true parentage. She bore his name and kept her heritage a secret up until the moment she killed Caden Winchester, where she revealed she was his half sister. Riley came to power during the coup which displaced Khan Winchester as the Regime heir. She disposed of Caden and Blaire, but did not rule long before she died in childbirth. Died at age 35.

Founded: Year 1, after the earthquake, by Malachi Fulton
History: South Edge came into existence when Malachi Fulton rescued a group of people in an earthquake, about the same time Winchester Regime formed. Their original camp had a wooden fence for a perimeter that they had built, with sleeping tents inside, and a few luxuries like a stream and a farm for food. When refugees from Winchester Regime came to his camp asking for protection, Malachi accepted, but the decision came with a price- it wasn't long before Winchester Regime came to claim their escaped prisoners- and a war broke out. South Edge won and took the leader of the other group as a prisoner, but not before Winchester Regime managed to destroy their camp. They were forced to leave, and moved into a high security prison. Although South Edge hasn't encountered too many problems with the Bandits (aside from a few raid attempts in their armory), they did suffer a nearly fatal blow when a mutated form of pneumonia known as South Edge Sickness infected a large percentage of their members. They have the cure now, but it is suspected that the sickness spread so fast because of overpopulation in South Edge, which is constantly growing. Chase Fulton murdered Malachi Fulton and took control. He changed the structure of South Edge, turning it into a monarchy, and made himself King, triggering a long succession of power struggles.
Current King: Zero Alvarian
Past Leaders: Malachi Fulton, Chase Fulton, Logan Alvarian, Lainee Campbell

Malachi Fulton: Founder of South Edge, also a doctor, instituted schooling system for children in the group, won war against Winchester Regime and took Derek Winchester prisoner, infamous for being too nice- often called weak and negligent when it came to security, was criticized for not being able to cure "South Edge Sickness" and for not killing Derek when he had the chance, often went MIA, was Derek Winchester's best friend before groups formed, was murdered by Chase Fulton at age 43, reign lasted for about 20 years.

Chase Fulton: After murdering his father, Malachi Fulton, to take his place as leader, Chase Fulton instituted a medieval monarchy, placing himself on the throne as the king. His reign was tumultuous and violent. His most remembered move as leader was his secret alliance with the Bandit leader, Jace Carther. The alliance created a false war between the groups, with the South Edge members being unaware that their leader wasn't on their side. Chase used the fake war to purge his group of the weak links, letting Jace break down his worthwhile but impossible members, and when they were broken, he swooped in to save them and affirmed their loyalty to him. However, Chase's reign came to an abrupt end when, on the night of his wedding to Evaline Bob, his best friend and right hand, Logan Alvarian, murdered him, which led Evaline to poison herself. Died at age 20, reign lasted approximately 1-2 years.

Logan Alvarian: He was Chase Fulton's best friend and right hand man. Successfully keeping Chase in the dark to his cruel intentions, Logan poisoned Chase and took the throne to himself. Not long after becoming ruler, he instituted an even more brutal system of operations and it was said he had a certain charisma about him that made people want to follow him. His childhood friend Blaire Taylor was rewarded for her years of friendship when Logan helped her and her boyfriend Caden Winchester overthrow Fawn Opaque in WR, and gifted the group to them as an extension of SE's power. Logan's downfall came at the hands of his lover Lainee Campbell, when he angered her by trying to break off their relationship. She stabbed him and pushed him over the edge of a cliff, and he fell to his death. Logan left behind a ward, Zero, and it was his intention that the boy ascend to the throne. Died at about age 25. Reign lasted approximately one year.

Lainee Campbell: The wife and Queen of Logan Alvarian, Lainee murdered her husband when he tried to leave her, and thus assumed control of South Edge. The previously good relationship she had with Zero, Logan's adopted child, disintegrated and pitted them against one another. Lainee's greater age led her to rule in relative safety for about one year before she attempted a coup on the Regime, taking Caden prisoner. To avoid a war, Zero approached Blaire and hatched a plan to help Caden escape. In thanks, Blaire sent her second in command, Riley Jensen, to be Zero's personal body guard and to keep Lainee in line. Lainee became a mouthpiece for Zero until he turned eighteen, and publicly executed her. Died at about age 30. Reign lasted approximately one year.

History: The Bandits have been around since before South Edge and Winchester Regime, but have never had so strong a presence as now. They have always ruled the city from the shadows, and make it a point to put the other two groups in their place. They lost a lot of members when three skilled fighters from South Edge- Roman Castille, Charlie Moore, and Sir Flintlock traveled through the city to find a hidden arsenal and killed half of their army. Trying to make a come-back, they took to kidnapping whoever they could and brainwashing them to be loyal to the Bandits. Their main supply of victims came from The Regime, although they did kidnap a few South Edge members as well. The Bandits used to be a group of loosely organized rogues that had no particular base and just roamed the city, but they are now centralized and organized, and starting a movement of growth. The Bandits were recently in a state of turmoil as several members had been exiled for insubordination. Over three attempts had been made on their then leader Jace Carther's life, twice by fellow bandits (Alexa Jane and Lawrence Bell), and once by Winchester Regime. Jace also had to kill his own second-in-command, Thomas Taylor, and his wife Rina Volkof, after an incident involving the death and torture of several of Thom's family members. Now, Jace has resigned from being leader and left his adopted son of sorts, Easton Cassel, in charge. Jace had done a lot of great things for the Bandits and he is missed, while Easton is regarded as young and immature...but perhaps he will go far. Alas, Easton Cassel slipped into insanity, leading to the murder of his wife, Piper Carther. Zayn Cassel, Easton's heir, has taken over. Hanging his father for treasonous acts, Zayn rules the highly militarized and structured Bandits with Abrial Briseno at his side. They are young, but they already have a reputation of being fair but relentless leaders.

Unknown Leader: Not much is known about the leader that came before Jace Carther except for the fact that he was murdered by Roman Castille. (you can add to this story if you want ;))
Jace Carther: Took charge of the Bandits while they were in a state of turmoil and unified them. Centralized the Bandits by founding a permanent base for their camp and made them more than triple in size. Was known for taking several prisoners of all groups, including insubordinate ones from his own, and brutally torturing them as a display of power and dominance. Used Stockholm Syndrome to gain most of his members. Caused a dilemma concerning his future heir when he banished his son Loki Carther and instituted Easton Cassel in his place. Is generally regarded as frightening and unfair, although he did do great things for the Bandits. Stepped down from being leader because several members related to Thomas Taylor refused to follow him after their relative's execution. Died at age 60. Reign lasted for about 20 years.

Easton Cassel: Although not Jace's son by blood, the young man ascended to power beneath Jace's tutelage. Easton took over the Bandits, who were in a state of peace at the time. It was under Easton's rule that a set of new Bandit laws were written and implemented, hearkening back to the days of the Spartans, carving out brutal reputation for the Bandits. This structure forced complete loyalty to the group and to the leaders, and brought the Bandits closely together. Protective traps and pits were also set up around Bandit territory to keep our intruders. The group thrived beneath Easton, until he went mad with blood lust. Generally considered a brutal tyrant, Easton was rumored to have led the Bandits through the Trail of Tears by resorting to feeding them with the carcasses of those who had died on the journey. He was also said to have been abusive towards his children, specifically his heir, Zayn Cassel, and to drink blood. His reign slowly deteriorated and led to the death of his wife, Piper Carther, whom he killed, which in turn led to his execution. Died at age 36, reign lasted about 15 years.

Founded: Year 25 by Jamal King
History: The Tintuhli was only recently founded by Jamal King, after the unfortunate death of his first wife, and mother to his only child. He started the group as a means of bringing rogues together, seeking safety in numbers to protect his only remaining family. The group quickly grew though as more and more rogues sought out the shelter of a defined group which didn't associate with the others, and a structure was quickly set up with specific ranks and powers. Five years after it's establishment, Jamal was taken captive by the Bandits and the group was left without a true ruler for some time. It wasn't until three years after that when Jamal's son, Albert King, rose up and claimed his place as King that things finally fell back to order. Two years into his reign, Albert had changed much about the Tintuhli, forming it into something darker than his father had intended. It was then that Jamal, managed to escape the Bandits and returned to the Spades expecting a warm welcome. However, Albert had grown hard and cold, and saw his father as soft and unfit to lead after his years of torture from the Bandits, and so turned the man out, exiling him from his own group entirely. Albert even went so far as to order that if anyone caught Jamal on their territory, he was to be taken prisoner and placed in the fights.
